SEAFOOD INDUSTRY IMPACT IN NL
Seafood is more than a business in Newfoundland and Labrador – it’s a cornerstone of our economy, our communities, and our culture.
Employing over 6,000 people living in over 70 of our coastal communities, our seafood processing sector supports local jobs, drives rural economies, and breathes life into our towns. For every dollar earned in processing, three more will ripple throughout our province – from local businesses to community services and beyond.
When you choose local seafood, you’re not just enjoying a world-class product – you’re supporting a way of life that has been handed down with pride for centuries.
HOW SEAFOOD GETS TO MARKET
From our waters to the world: How Newfoundland and Labrador seafood makes its way to market
From Ocean to Offloading
The journey starts in the North Atlantic on the world’s most fertile fishing grounds. Fresh, raw product is landed by skilled local harvesters – proud community members with generations of experience delivering the highest-quality catch.
Handling & Processing
Once landed and graded, the raw product is purchased and delivered to state-of-the-art processing facilities located across the province. There, highly trained workers carefully prepare and package a variety of species to meet the world-class standards our industry is known for. Nothing goes out the door without their stamp of approval.
Shipped with Care
Before heading to markets around the world, every shipment is labelled and logged for full traceability. This level of transparency ensures our seafood can be bought with confidence from global purchasers.
Served Around the Globe
From local kitchens to high-end restaurants, Newfoundland and Labrador seafood is coveted for its quality and prized by some of the most discerning tastebuds on the planet. Bon appetit!
